CATCHING GILBERT by Hunter Larson
A few weeks ago I saw a sign in the store about a northern in the
pond. It also said there was a $5 dollar reward for catching it. Last weekend I had my tackle box at the campground getting
it ready for a fishing trip. So I decided to try and catch the northern. My dad said to try the shallow end of the pond with
a spinner with hair on it. The first time I tried I got a bass. Then I took a little break and ate supper. Around 7:30 I tried
again. I had been casting for about 15 minutes. My mom and sister had been walking around the campground and right about the
time they walked up something grabbed the spinner. I started reeling. The fish jumped just enough that I could see what it
was. I got it half way on shore and my mom got my dad. When my dad got there he held the fish down while I got a stringer.
When I got back I held the fish to take a few pictures. Then we started to take the fish down to the creek. We got stopped
2 or 3 times on the way so people could see the fish. When we got there we let the fish go and then went to the office to
get my reward. That’s what catching Gilbert was like.
Other Stats about Gilbert...31" long, 8# 7 oz., caught on a #5 Mepps spinner with a bucktail
Youth Fishing Tournament
Saturday, September 15, 2007
Hunter has inspired a lot of other fisherpeople, so we're holding
a fishing tournament to see how many "Gilberts" there are in the pond. Prizes will be awarded for biggest fish and for
the heaviest fish.
